Liposuction in Richmond, Indiana
Allure Center for Plastic Surgery

Liposuction is one of the great advances of modern medicine. Over the past few decades, several sophisticated liposuction methods have been developed, allowing plastic surgeons to remove unwanted fat cells from various areas of the body. Dr. Myla Bennett is one of the leading Richmond liposuction surgeons. She has been thoroughly trained in state-of-the-art liposuction techniques, and she has helped thousands of patients enhance their body contours, shape their arms and legs, and add definition to the neck line. If you would like to learn how liposuction can help you permanently remove stubborn fat deposits, please peruse the information below.

Liposuction: Is It for Me?

You might be a Richmond liposuction candidate if you are close to your ideal weight and have realistic expectations. Although Dr. Bennett uses minimally invasive liposuction techniques, this treatment is a surgical procedure. Therefore, liposuction candidates should be in good health to safely tolerate anesthesia and surgical tissue manipulation. In addition, liposuction candidates should keep in mind that this is not a weight loss procedure. Instead, liposuction can help shape localized areas of the body that retain fat deposits despite a diligent exercise and dietary regime.

In order to help her liposuction patients understand what they might look like after this procedure, Dr. Bennett encourages them to browse the before-and-after photo gallery. In addition, she performs thorough pre-surgical consultations, during which time she explains how liposuction might change the patient's body contours. Generally, liposuction can help remove unwanted fatty tissues from the following body areas:

  • "Love handles"
  • "Bra rolls"
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Fat deposits on the stomach
  • Calves
  • Upper arms
  • Neck and chin

Liposuction: The Procedure

Dr. Bennett performs several variations of liposuction, including the tumescent technique and the laser-assisted (SmartLipo) technique. During both procedures, a form of local anesthesia is used to enhance patient comfort. Time in surgery varies from two to four hours, and depends on the number of areas treated and the amount of fatty tissue removed.

The tumescent liposuction method is also known as the wet method. This is because a large amount of special solution is injected in the treated area prior to suctioning out the fat cells. The solution provides an anesthetizing effect and it makes the tissues firmer, thus making it easier to dislodge and suction out the fat cells with a small metal tube (the cannula).

During SmartLipo, Dr. Bennett uses a laser to dislodge and liquefy fat cells. The liquid fat is then suctioned out with the cannula. Alternatively, the liquefied fat can be safely absorbed and eliminated by the body. The laser-assisted liposuction method allows Dr. Bennett to perform precisely targeted liposuction treatments, and it creates less discomfort than the tumescent method. In addition, the application of laser energy helps tighten the skin covering the treatment area. This is especially important for older patients whose skin is less elastic and might not "retract" easily to adjust to the new, slimmer body contours. The application of laser energy stimulates collagen production and helps the skin look youthful and smooth after the procedure.

After Your Liposuction Surgery

Immediately after liposuction surgery, the treated areas will appear swollen and bruised. If the tumescent technique was used, a small amount of the tumescent liquid might be weeping out of the tiny liposuction incisions as the body begins to heal. This is completely normal and usually stops within a few days. Dr. Bennett recommends that her patients take a few days off work to recover after their liposuction treatments. After a few days, the initial swelling will have subsided, and patients can safely return to work and resume light physical activities. However, strenuous exercise, lifting and physical work should be avoided for four to six weeks to allow the body to heal completely. After this time, Richmond liposuction patients can resume all of their regular activities and flaunt their newly slim body contours.
